Bush Armageddon (6:22 pm)

Steve Clemons raises the question, “Did the President Declare “Secret War” Against Syria and Iran?” He quotes the relevant portion of Bush’s speech, and points to the Iranian Consulate in Arbil, Iraq, which was raided last night, to support speculation. Steve also has a portion of a transcript from today’s Senate Foreign Relations Committe hearings, quoting exchanges by Biden and Hagel with a distinctly evasive Condoleeza Rice.

update:
Josh Marshall highlights a rather noteworthy portion of Rice’s testimony in which she responds to a question from Jim Webb:

Is it the position of this administration that it possesses the authority to take unilateral action against Iran in the absence of a direct threat without congressional approval?

There were civil assemblies tonight to protest this lunatic romp in the middle east, and the suspension of our recognition of the Geneva conventions at the Guantanamo Bay facility, our own constitution with the Military Powers Act and so on.  This will be a blip on the T.V. screen because news anchors don’t get it and most folks get their news from Katy Couric who talks about Bush putting himself on the line with his speech last night about escalating the troop levels, not mentioning that it’s our sons and daughters that are being put there, in point of fact.
America feels kind of funny without REALLY knowing why.  When the nukes start flying in the Middle East, as they will indeed before 2008, they still may not.  We (or Israel) will only be using the “little” ones, 1kt; roughly equivalent to 1/15th of the Hiroshima/Nagasaki bombs and they’ll be detonated (in all likelihood) above the Iranian
nuclear facilities that are buried under 70 feet of concrete.  It won’t look like Hiroshima…the T.V. image will seem to be no big deal.  A hole in the ground “over there” where all of those foreigners live.
You better believe George showed his hand last night to Iran and Syria; to all of us.  He and the PNAC are not bluffing because they don’t get it either.  They’re rubes who have gone to Vegas and plan on cheating the house.
Holy shit.
They don’t understand that once this crap starts to fly, there’s no end to it.  Bush is a damned blowhard backed up by real guns and bombs and seriously high powered thugs.
The folks in the streets tonight are considered hippie whack jobs by middle America.  We have to figure out how to do some massive education program mighty fast because their kids will be bearing the bloody shit just like the children of the folks reading and posting to blogs.  It’s only all of us together who can stop it.  It’s that “we the people..” stuff that can stop it, and only that.
The politicians, (who ought to get it; this is an emegency) are still showing off their new school clothes.  Obviously, they think it’s just a drill and as long as it passes muster with the fire inspector, all is well.
Lord!
