Stop the compliments (4:26 pm)
Read Brian’s post below about appealing to the electorate’s anger. I agree. Why must every speech or valid criticism of McCain begin with “John McCain has served this country with honor and as a true patriot” or “John McCain is my friend and has served his country well…” It’s immediately defensive and weak. Could we please call for an Obama-campaign-wide moratorium on flattering remarks about McCain? Obama’s criticisms are tepid enough without these defusing preambles.

Why must every speech begin with “McCain has served this country with honor and as a true patriot”?
The Democrats have gotten the label of being “soft, not tough enough to blast away anyone who endangers our country in any way.” This is the way the conservatives have deliberately portrayed them.
Why when they oppose the war --- immediately they are accused of not caring about or supporting the troops.
Americans have become so worried about national security, so fearful that “they are out to get us” that anyone, especially Democrats who do not pay obeisance to the military, honor any one who served in the armed voices, especially those “canonized” as legitimate war heroes---that the Democrats feel as though they are walking on very very thin ice when it comes to the military.
I am not even sure McCain is a “legitimate” war hero, but the nation seems to believe he is ergo, he is.
Politicians who were war heroes or served with an honorable discharge have a “shield” against criticism of any kind.
What about Kerry? Well, he liked lattes and spoke in French to his brother over the phone == now is we could find something like this out about McCain.
McCain plays his “halo” for all its worth.
Not much we can do about it.
