Political Junkies: Where Do You Get Your News Online? (10:36 am)

If you’re reading this blog, you probably think of the Internet as a—if not the—primary source of news.

It’s a brave new media world for political junkies. If you’re interested in helping two academics figure out exactly how people like you are finding political news online, head over here for a few minutes. The quadrennial survey, conducted by Dr. Barbara Kaye of the University of Tennessee and Dr. Tom Johnson of Texas Tech University during the last three election years, runs until Nov. 26th.

Sample questions:

How likely are you to purposely connect to online political sources that SHARE your point of view about political issues?

How likely are you to purposely connect to online political sources that CHALLENGE your point of view about a candidate?

I find my answers to these questions slightly embarrassing.

Your privacy is guaranteed - the survey is encrypted, no IP info collected, etc. Again, the survey is here.

Just finished the survey.  Must say time for a cigarette.  Long, repetitive and configured to address statistic consistency. (probably with clear use of SPSS software) I’m interested in knowing how this turns out.

I would like to mention, however, that this survey would be of immense interest to me if it were to distinguish between cable news shows.  While there is mention of shows that parody the news such as the Daily Show and the Colbert Report, I believe one could learn incredibly accurate and significant info. if the survey were to break down the interviewee’s opinion of the accuracy, objectivity of let’s say watching CNN vs. Fox news.

It’s one thing to lump all cable news shows into one category; it’s another to assess reliability across so wide a spectrum.

In any event I do encourage others to fill it out.

I think both of the questions you selected from the survey are very, very interesting and provocative.

Personally, I guess I shouldn’t be too surprised to re-learn the fact I follow progressive blogs intently and not so much on....well, not so much.

However-in the interest of others--it’s good on occasion to hit the opposition...although at your own risk.

Peace Out
